It was announced today that Chanda Chevannes' new film Unfractured will premiere as the opening night film at Planet in Focus. We are so proud and thrilled. Chanda is an inspiring storyteller and her tireless work to tell important, impactful stories is why we love collaborating with her. She's a force of nature, and this film is a beautiful testament to not only her commitment to her subjects, but her commitment to the work they do.

Unfractured

Scientist, writer, cancer survivor and long-time eco-activist Dr. Sandra Steingraber is the subject of Chanda Chevannes’ uplifting film Unfractured. A resident of upstate New York, where she has taught at Cornell University and Ithaca College, Steingraber’s focus has been on getting governments to outlaw fracking. Chevannes follows her as she makes speeches, plans strategy with other activists and gets arrested protesting “the industrialization of the Finger Lakes.” At the same time, the film shows her dealing with husband and artist Jeff de Castro, who is suffering from a series of disabling strokes, and their two children. A humanist and brilliant multi-tasker, she remains fiercely committed to her cause. At its heart, the film is about Steingraber’s role in this landmark battle as she navigates her way through hope, despair, shock, and—ultimately—joy.

When we heard about Aerin Fogel's (aka Queen of Swords) celebration of feminism we got really excited about it. Being a 100% independent female owned & operated company (for 8 YEARS!!!) is something we know a lot about. So when we had the opportunity to help build the brand, create a marketing & social strategy for what many people are already calling "Lilith Fair 2.0" we grabbed at it. Well, Amy grabbed at it. Because, well, Amy. She is known for getting the job done (like Big Daddy Kane, as they always say) and she immediately got to work on ideas for how to introduce a new feminist brand to market, in a year where, well, let's be honest. Women are more united and fired up than ever before. Who better to strategize how to mobilize and communicate than Amy?

We aren't just excited about Venus Fest because of what we were able to contribute to the marketing and campaign, but we're excited as participants. Feminism is often misunderstood so we felt it was best not to assume anything, and get some of the facts of Feminism to our audience. For those who already know, remember and honor how we got here. For those of us who don't know, hopefully we spark an interest, or a connection. This festival is as much about being a feminist as it is being an ally. Allies Welcome was an important part of the campaign. Inclusion and intersectional feminism were important.

Because this is an audience of DIY, and maker culture, we wanted to invoke that feeling with how we evolve the campaign, and build our community. The festival is collaborative by nature, and it was important to Aerin that we were able to keep everything as welcoming, healing and positive as possible.

MusiCounts is an incredible organization which provides support of music education in Canada. 2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the MusiCounts Band Aid Program, which provides musical instruments to schools in need. Since 1997 MusiCounts has grown significantly and by the end of 2017 will have awarded over $10,000,000 through its programs. These funds will have benefitted over 950 schools and community organizations, supported over 350 post-secondary music program graduates and honoured 12 extraordinary music teachers. The team wanted to simplify the approach, make information more accessible and showcase some of the incredible work they do.

The catch, they needed it done - FAST. :) We are thrilled to have been able to help, and are excited to see how this organization continues to have amazing impacts on music education, and aspiring musicians themselves.

If you are able to donate, it's a fantastic charity doing very important work in Canada. Music is a great outlet, escape and something every child should have the opportunity to access.

When our friends at Taqqut asked if we were interested in helping them put together a digital teaser for their new series Anaana's Tent, of course we said yes.

We're very excited to help with the digital media content for such an incredible show. Anaana’s Tent is an entertaining and educational children’s series that mixes animation, puppets, and live action. This series is designed for preschool children between 2 and 5 years old. Anaana’s Tent is loosely modelled after classic educational series such as Sesame Street, Mr. Dressup, and Dora the Explorer. Each episode of Anaana’s Tent will be built around an educational theme and provide developmentally appropriate activities with the help of our cast of recurring characters, cultural performers, musical guests, and animated sequences. Set in the Arctic, this distinctly Northern show will showcase talent from across Nunavut and introduce new cultural traditions and language to children across Canada.

When our friends at Taqqut asked if we were interested in helping them put together a digital teaser for their new series Anaana's Tent, of course we said yes.
We're very excited to help with the digital media content for such an incredible show. The pleasure of working with a charity who's sole focus is helping women live with Cancer, is exactly why we do what we do. Gathering requirements and making the platform a consolidated place for managing such a massive program was a task the team was more than happy to conquer. We brought together a team to define and breakdown requirements, flow, and integration of multiple platforms to provide LGFB with the control panel they needed to bring the LGFB program to the next level. We are proud of all of the work we've done with the program over the last 6 years. Our audience in this case is women, and their caregivers, and providing them with a clean, beautiful and easy way to get support was critical to us. These women and their caregivers have enough to worry about day-to-day. We wanted to help create a space for them to be, and show them a little bit about what they can expect in connecting with LGFB.

PRESS RELEASE

Canadian cancer charity Look Good Feel Better celebrates International Women’s Day by redefining womanhood.

Today, March 8, 2017, Look Good Feel Better launched a social media initiative showcasing 24 pieces of unique content in 24 hours, starting at midnight. The cancer organization is asking Canadians to define what womanhood means to them, using #mywomanhood. Throughout the day, the campaign features the words and images of survivors, caregivers, partners and LGFB volunteers across multiple social media channels.

“Too often, we define cancer patients and survivors only in terms of their disease, as opposed to who they are as people and as women,” says LGFB Vice President of Marketing and Development Karen Cinq Mars.

“Our #mywomanhood campaign gives them a voice so they can redefine themselves on their terms. And this seemed like the perfect day to do it.”

Using International Women’s Day as it’s backdrop, the campaign is part of the official launch of a new website and positioning for the Look Good Feel Better brand.

Look Good Feel Better is a client we have had the honor of working with for 6 years. See Thee Rise is a program born out of our collective desire to unify Canadians on the future of Canada. We as both Canadians and a collective of creators & entrepreneurs believe this is a critical time for our Country (and the World). So we answered that by creating a program to try to help. We know that times of uncertainty are when the best art is made. We felt compelled to do something. So we did. We invite you to download our Press Release, and read more about the program below.

When it comes to the future of Canada, it doesn't matter where you sit; it matters what you stand for. #SeeTheeRise

We created a program in which we will seek to unite AND ignite Canadians through a familiar vehicle; The campfire. It is critical to us that we involve Indigenous Canadians in this project and conversation. In our design of the program we considered how best to achieve engagement of all Canadians, far and wide. We want help Canadians to rise up and claim our collective voice. We want to create a safe, culturally sensitive space for all Canadians to discuss our shared values. We will facilitate both digital and real world campfires across the country, which will unite groups as diverse and unique as our culture. These campfires will focus on what it means to be Canadian, what we want for our future, and how we can do it, together.

We will facilitate organized campfires, but will also release our framework to Canadians wishing to host their own, including digital content & tools to report back to us on their discussions, or share their opinions in a constructive way. We see this as a sacred space for Canadians, part conversation, part ceremony whether online or in person. We will produce content, podcasts, and document our story and journey to share with Canadians along the way.

The campfire tour will culminate in a final campfire event where we will share what we are referring to as a ‘Charter for the Future’, which will have been informed by all Canadians taking part in the initiative. We seek to unite, unify and raise the bar for all Canadians moving into the next 5 years. Canada, we see thee rise.

Tes Brillant Exploits

When it comes to the future of Canada, it doesn't matter where you sit; it matters what you stand for. #SeeTheeRise
See Thee Rise / Tes Brillant Exploits is a program born out of our collective desire to unify Canadians on the future of Canada. Here at Teen Vogue, we love to hear about the unconventional ways people are making it in fashion, since, as Avery proves, there’s no right or wrong way to discover and chase your dreams. Cancer and its treatment can rob a woman of many things, including her sense of self. Your participation on Thursday June 16 for WINK Day will help a woman with cancer see herself in the mirror again and bring awareness to the social and emotional challenges she faces. All money raised will fund Look Good Feel Better workshops that provide valuable cosmetic tips and tools to lift her spirits and help her face cancer with courage.

Just paint your eyes blue and take a photo of yourself giving a wink as a sign of support and solidarity for women with cancer.

Post your wink on all of your social networks and tag it #winkday so your photo will be part of the WINK movement nationwide!
","field_ft_9":"none","field_id_10":"","field_ft_10":"br","field_id_11":"","field_ft_11":null,"field_id_12":"1","field_ft_12":"none","field_id_13":"{filedir_2}WINKDAY_SM.jpg","field_ft_13":"none","field_id_14":"","field_ft_14":null,"field_id_15":"","field_ft_15":null,"field_id_16":"http://winkday.ca/","field_ft_16":"xhtml","field_id_18":"","field_ft_18":null,"field_id_19":"0","field_ft_19":null,"field_id_20":"0","field_ft_20":"none","field_id_21":"","field_ft_21":null,"field_id_22":"","field_ft_22":"xhtml","field_id_23":"","field_ft_23":null,"field_id_24":"","field_ft_24":null,"field_id_25":"","field_ft_25":null,"field_id_26":"","field_ft_26":null,"field_id_27":"","field_ft_27":null,"field_id_28":"","field_ft_28":null,"field_id_29":"","field_ft_29":null,"field_id_31":"","field_ft_31":null,"field_id_32":"","field_ft_32":null,"field_id_33":"","field_ft_33":null,"field_id_34":"","field_ft_34":null,"field_id_35":"","field_ft_35":null,"field_id_36":"","field_ft_36":null,"field_id_37":"A cause and foundation we believe in, Look Good Feel Better and Facing Cancer Together are programs we have been supporting and providing pro bono services for, for years. Congratulations Jason - From Amy.

When I first met Jason Zada, too many years ago now to count - his dream - since he was a kid was to make a movie. Jason's success, vision and talent in amassing audience online was well known, from Elf Yourself, to Take This Lollipop. He is a visionary and an innovator. So when he got the opportunity to direct his first feature, it wasn't small. He doesn't do anything small. I can say that because I've worked as a producer for him for a very long time. He is meticulous, he's made me a better producer because of it. Because if you haven't thought of it, he has, and if you haven't mapped it out, he has. Working with him has been a highlight of my career from the time when we both complained about escaping our fulltime jobs to when he started telling everyone that I was starting my own company before I'd quit my job. He's not only a collaborator of mine, he's a friend and a big brother.

Watching Jason evolve into the person he is today has been amazing, it's a rare thing to be able to watch someone reinvent themselves so many times, and I like to think he's enjoyed the process of watching me do the same. That's the kind of collaborative relationship you dream of as a producer, with a director. That you can always enjoy the discussions that lead to an idea, as much as the idea itself.

Watching Jason make this movie was also amazing, supporting him by taking on a project he didn't have the bandwidth to fully lead while he was making his dream come true last year was also an honor. I missed him though, because it's just not the same when he's not at the helm.

The Forest is in theatres now. If you haven't seen it, you should. It's Zada - meaning It's beautiful, disturbing and impactful.

Sometimes the things we do never make it to the consumers we built it for, whatever the reason its always a terrible feeling, especially if you're like we are and put all of your waking hours into making something for "the people". So with that said, this particular project was all about being covert, it was about subterfuge, access, surveillance, and choosing allegiance. Because of that, if you'd like to see it, you can email us, if you can guess what this was for, we'll grant you access. Promise. That said though, it's only to show you what kind of work we spent half of 2015 doing. About what we at Lunch do, and how we believe in doing it. We believe our clients and consumers are smart, and deserve experiences that make them think. Hunt the Truth.

The Brief

Halo: Hunt the Truth was envisioned as a three week narrative digital adventure that placed the player in the starring role within the story, and by design inside the Halo Universe. Through an evolving online portal, players would be invited to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the franchise’s hero. Using a series of custom-made tools and interacting with a range of characters, players were invited to chose to peruse the version of the ‘truth’ that most appealed to them. We utilized themes of surveillance and subterfuge to gain access to a wider pop culture audience. And since the custom WebGL experience was fully responsive, players could join in on the full experience on phone, tablets or desktop. The goal was to bring new users to the franchise, and introduce them to the world of Halo.

We utilized themes of surveillance and subterfuge to gain access to a wider pop culture audience. We created a story with two opposing sides represented by our character, and ONI (The Halo equivalent of the NSA) which users could experience, align, change sides and impact story and outcome.

The Team

Working in tandem, the team behind this project included Lunch, Arbitrary, Director Evan Silver, The Mission Business, Six Degrees, Ficticious, Avery Plewes, and Saved Ground. United in the desire to create a user-based experience that reached across platforms and positioned the player as the story’s driving force, Lunch pushed the envelope of contemporary, mobile-first transmedia design. Special thanks to Jason Zada.

The Experience

The experience was designed to lure users in by sending out a first transmission featuring Cobie Smulders as our main character. That first transmission then lead users to an interactive and immersive hub where they were asked to participate in the hunt. As the experience developed the user would be asked to choose sides and participate in helping a trapped Cobie to get to the bottom of locating the hero in the Universe. As the hunt progressed tools such as a compiler, terminal, messaging interface, surveillance footage, video transmissions and a transporter were used to help the user move through the experience, and access helpful information in order to proceed through the experience culminating in a reveal of how the user’s engagement affected the end result.

From concept to final, including gifs, puns, and more anthropomorphic characters than we've ever seen at once. We hope you enjoy, we're told there's more than 800 illustrations in total. We already told you a little bit about the preparation that went into this event, but now that the event is over we can tell you a little bit more about what we did, and how we did it. We worked with Red Bull Canada and Red Bull Music Academy to understand the requirements of bringing one of their lectures to life. We had the pleasure of working with the team at Koerner Hall to create a beautiful evening. Jacknife design completed the beautiful illustration, program, signage and contributed to set direction for the event to accent both Darren himself, but also the incredible venue. We brought in The Mission Business' Elenna Mosoff to help with the actual event staging, management and venue coordination to bring this together. Saved Ground helped to capture the evening, filming the event, doing post for the teasers, and of course prepping the most important clips for Mr. Aronofsky as well as elements for front of house. Rob King joined in and created a beautiful interactive portrait which was shown in front of house at the post-event reception, Six Degrees provided the auditory magic that they always do. Amy of course ran a tight ship to ensure that the evening went off as smoothly as humanly possible (sometimes we think she's a robot). This was truly a beautiful evening, where Darren Aronofsky shared wisdom, insight and knowledge of his favorite music moments in film. Red Bull Music Academy's co-founder Torsten Schmidt provided context to what RBMA is all about and served as the evening's host. We are thrilled to have been able to capture, produce and partake in this amazing evening, and project. We're grateful to have been able to have a hand in making it happen.

"I guess almost everyone has experienced that at one stage in their life or another, how your inner and your outer worlds sometimes just don’t correspond." Darren Aronofsky
amy miranda
darren aronofsky
koerner hall
lunch
music
red bull media house
red bull music academy
rob king
saved ground
six degrees
the mission business
toronto
September 10th, at Koerner Hall in Toronto Red Bull Music Academy came to Toronto for a Conversation with Darren Aronofsky.
