FITC - Toronto 2010 - Playground

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=66

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=66

So, this year i'm really excited about FITC. I'm lucky enough to have put together what I think is going to be a pretty exciting discussion.

I wanted to assemble a group of people who would be able to have a conversation, rather than a typical panel discussion and I feel really thrilled to say, I have.

Producing Creative: Playing for Keeps in a Global Digital Playground
With expectations getting higher and technology becoming more accessible, the heat is on Producers to make magic. This panel will be discussing the art of creative production. Even though it looks like we're spinning plates, there is in fact an order to things. Is there a process? What’s the right way to execute digital and broadcast production together? What leads what? Is there a formula for success? And what happens when you throw in even more plates to spin outdoor, ambient, print, events?

This diverse panel of seasoned integrated production talent will step inside the business of creative production with a look at what works, what doesn't and where it's all headed.

David Eriksson, CD and CEO of North Kingdom, Adrian Gunadi, ACD of Production, Birthplace, Myself, Founder & President of Lunch, and Jason Zada, Director, Digital Evangelist and former ECD of EVB.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
If you have any questions or topics you'd like us to touch on shoot me a note.

Director Nolan Sarner - Mortimer

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=65

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=65

Nolan Sarner's short "Mortimer" struck me with great fervor, not only because it's hilarious, but also because its beautifully shot, well written - AND contains a puppet. I've always wanted to do something digital with puppets, and those of you who've worked with me know this to be gospel. (Cue clients who want to do some crazy work with puppets).

Nolan grew up in the business having a father who worked in the ad business instilled an early passion for film artistry in Nolan’s mind. I too related to this, having two parents in "the business". His first encounter in film came in the opportunity to assist famed Canadian documentary filmmaker Ron Mann, which led to Sarner attending McGill University where he began making documentaries of his own.

Following his graduation from McGill Nolan took the immersive leap into the Ryerson Summer Film Program that consists of thirteen weeks of six day a week comprehensive, classes and practical film experience which basically equates to four years of film training in one summer. Since then Nolan has been building his reel and developing feature projects with the intention to direct. He recently wrote and directed his short film Mortimer starring famed local actor Carlo Rota (of 24 and Little Mosque On the Prairie fame), which has been wowing festival audiences internationally.

Nolan is available through Imported Artists/Lunch.
I'm doing something a little unconventional (of course) and moderating and also taking part in the panel, I'm absolutely thrilled and honored to have assembled a great panel of individuals and i'm lucky to say good friends for what I think is going to be a really interesting, and lively discussion. Ideally, I'd like for it to feel like people in attendance are actually present within one of our conversations.
Q&A for Hyper Island.

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=56

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=56

I recently uncovered this - back in September 2005 (click the graphic for the original post) I was asked by Hyper Island in Sweden if they could ask me some questions. Of course I said yes. When I read this, I realized that even though it was close to 2 years ago, I feel exactly the same way. I guess thats how you know you're on the right track.

September 2, 2005
I got an email last week from Hyper Island. If you haven’t heard of them and are in the digital space - check them out. They pride themselves on creating freethinking digital idealists. Something that I think more of us should be taking the opportunity and initiative to do.
Pretty cool. They asked me about whether I might be able to answer some questions about what Digital Trends/Influences might be.

Of course I was happy to share some ideas on my favorite topic. Digital. I’ve included the questions and my responses below.

> 1a. In the upcoming 2-5 years what do think the biggest digital trends/influences will be?
I’d like to see people get out from behind their computers. I know I’d certainly like to be able to engage outside of the traditional “digital” experience. More development and innovation in terms of interactive projections, the graffiti research lab stuff, more interaction between communities in general. I think consumers are finally ready to have the
kinds of experiences we’re now able to produce. I think we’ll see a lot more installations and digital production as art. It’s what’s next in my mind. Websites and banner ads will become a necessary component in terms of media-
but I truly believe that open source/guerilla style technology will turn the industry on it’s ear. It has to get beyond desktop. The future is multi-tasking, anything that enables people to do this more easily is going to be a key influencer.

> b. What kind of industry research does your company do regarding future trends?
To be honest, I’m not sure we do enough of this. I think a lot of companies get caught up in the day-to-day work and it’s hard to stay involved/in the loop as a company. I think it comes down to individuals keeping themselves informed and up to date on what’s out there, what can be done, and what’s coming next. The interest has to be there at the individual level. I rely heavily on my team in addition to my own network to stay engaged on what’s next.

> c. What does your company do to keep up to date with industry trends?
>
It really comes down to working groups within the company. I think individuals do their own research and networking to stay involved in emerging trends. I learn most about what’s next by just keeping an ear to the ground and trying to stay as up to speed as possible with what everyone else is working on. Dialogue between companies is important. I think we have to get past the idea that sharing erodes the industry - I think not sharing is eroding it.

> 2. In your opinion what is missing in the industry today?
Production Management training in addition to cross training of creatives.
Much emphasis is put on the education and training of
development/programming talent, and creative skils like design, copywriting etc, with comparatively little emphasis being placed on the overall management of the production. As projects become increasingly complex, it’s essential to have talent who have a general understanding of the actual
production. I’d love to see Producers become a greater segment of the market. Broadcast producers have long been a creative asset and resource in execution of a project, I’d like to see the same emphasis on Interactive/Digital Producers. I think to some extent the idea of an
Interactive Producer or Project manager brings with it the idea of pencil pushing and a pretty rigid perspective. I’d like to see the term Project Manager be eliminated from our vocabulary as it pertains to production management. The last thing I think that’s missing - or that could be done
better is communication. I think the industry in Europe has done a much better job of staying in contact with each other and keeping an open dialogue that we have in North America. I’ve been working towards trying to get the industry in Toronto talking again. I think it’s imperative to the evolution of the industry.

> 3. What skills are you looking for in future employees?
I tend look for 3 things. Multifaceted Creativity, Innovative thinking, and Passion. You can’t be a true contributor, whether on a development, creative or production level without being engaged and passionate about the work.
It’s really a spark. I usually know right away whether I think someone is going to be able to be a contributor. I think of what first got me into the industry, and it was really my desire to produce cool work on whatever level. I think that helped me to stay involved and engaged all of these
years. It’s an industry that’s ever changing, evolving, the job I did 3 years ago, although the same in title, is completely different in execution due to the evolving nature of the business and industry. There’s something inspiring about that.
Innovation: Futurist Richard Thomas (Rescheduled!)
Details:"As a consequence of pervasive computing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pervasive_computing> , interaction design is poised to become one of the main liberal arts of the twenty-first century." Malcolm McCullough <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_McCullough>

Generally, Richard will be demonstrating that interactivity, "interaction design" is the amalgam of several disciplines, and today well surpasses the digital media space. The skills nurtured in IxD are sought after in all facets of human creation, use mechanics of financial transactions, product design, new forms of social technologies, architecture, City planning, urban computing and beyond. " Interaction" is swallowing the world whole as hard things begin to adopt soft qualities. Are we prepared?

This talk will centralize around the several emerging forms of interaction, and the role interface and interaction plays in the social construction of reality and the creation of new value within human architectures of desire and motivation.
Opening January 28th from 6-9pm (right after inter-action)
"The Taxali 300" showcases hundreds of small illustrations and collages originally created for such esteemed publications as Rolling Stone, Time, GQ, Newsweek, Esquire and The New York Times among others. Spanning 2 decades and multiple awards and accolades, "The Taxali 300" presents Gary's exceptional collection of commercial illustration as a complete body of work in a gallery setting for the first time, allowing viewers to appreciate the prolific scope of visual communications and tactile character design intrinsically associated with Gary Taxali's artwork.

"Gary Taxali visually blends now with then. His style, inspired by vintage comics and advertising art, is repurposed with the goal of communicating the ironies and comical essence of popular culture. His work is at once alluring and endearing. Despite the vintage look, he is neither maudlin or nostalgic. His imagery is rich in satiric verve."

Indusblue launches CTV Olympic quiz.

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=39

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=39

After all the Olympic experience Indusblue has had building the official Olympics sites for both Torino 2006 and Beijing 2008, they said they couldn’t possibly pass up the opportunity to work with the Olympics again. This time on the experiential side.

The Hockey Twin microsite Indusblue designed and developed for CTV Olympics is a quiz that attempts to pair up Men’s, Women’s and Sledge Team Canada hockey players with the Canadian hockey fan.

The questions asked of Team Canada were the same ones asked in the quiz, consumers are matched with Olympians on team Canada based on results.

The results are always different based on how you answer each of the questions.

"We wanted to create something very visual and fun around the concept of narrowing down the players from the starting line up to that one final twin. Our train of thought went something like this:
CRAZY PAPERVISION SITE WITH FLYING 3D CARDS!!And it worked. CTV Olympics has been a fantastic and very accommodating client that gave us the creative freedom to do what we thought would work well. We didn’t go overboard with the PaperVision as is quite easy to do, we wanted to keep it simple but cool, and keep the usability up. We implemented cinematic effects with fast cuts in between transitions, some interesting 3D card flips and made almost 40 little icons for each of the questions." says Dayton Pereira Indusblue's co-founder and Creative Director.

Apparently the chances of two players answering all of the questions in the EXACT same way is: 1 in 40,000.
Wish we calculated that BEFORE we built an entire system to avoid the situation. Oh well, now we know.

Tool Signs The company P

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=33

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=33

Tool Signs Participant Entertainment Leader:
The company P

Tool of North America has signed The company P, a Swedish content and design studio that creates participant drama and social entertainment. This genre takes a single story and encourages active viewer participation by utilizing trans-media opportunities, including TV broadcasting, interactive technology, social media, mobile communication and online games. Tool will represent the company and produce projects with its vast digital and production resources, applying the unique participatory entertainment approach to advertising projects.

The company P's games, shows, and content are created in collaboration with their audience following the same basic open philosophy that has led to the success of open-source software programs. Leading industry experts, researchers from game and ICT academia, artists and enthusiasts joined forces to create the company, and the combined strength of their individual influences is reflected in the broad array of work that the studio pushes out.

"Today's entertainment consumers are immersed in an environment in which their day-to-day lives are completely interactive. What they do at The company P is basically fulfill that growing demand for a say in the action by applying familiar concepts of participation with the familiar format of TV and the Internet, essentially creating a new genre," noted Tool EP Brian Latt. "We want to expand this concept into the commercial world, and we think The company P is exactly the right partner to make this happen."

"We have always been impressed with Tool's work," stated Christopher Sandberg, CEO of The company P, "so when we heard that they wanted to get into the interactive game, we were all for a collaboration. With their digital and production resources and our creative team and experience, we should be able to produce some incredible work."

The company P has recently completed a production with Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and is currently in development on interactive entertainment properties with Tim Kring (creator of Heroes). The company P's past work includes the Interactive Emmy and SIME Award-winning production of The Truth About Marika, a participant drams and TV series; Momentum, a techno-occult pervasive game; Outstanding, a participatory exhibition at the Museum of World Culture; scriptwriting and design for Furiae, an episodic dark fantasy RPG for mobile and PC; and XOver TV, an innovative broadcasting format that allows audiences to participate through avatars as studio guests.

For their groundbreaking work in the interactive world, The company P has been recognized with an the AIB in International Media Excellence in 2008, and was nominated for a Prix Europe award in the Emerging Media category. Their team of industry leaders frequently present papers at some of the most important conventions and award shows today, including the Eurovision TV Summit, the NAB Show, the BCWW, and the Interactive Exchange.

"We're always looking to work with innovative interactive storytellers. What attracted us to The company P is they understand how to go beyond the niche of ARG's and tell stories that leverage multiple digital platforms ,but connect with the masses. said Tool Digital EP Dustin Callif. "It's an exciting time for us and we can't wait to work with The company P to create amazing, breakthrough interactive campaigns with our agency clients."

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=32

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=32

This Thursday at Narwhal Gallery in Toronto Stephen Appleby-Barr's latest solo exhibition opens.

Stephen Appleby-Barr Preview Art Work

Emerging artist Stephen Appleby-Barr presents a solo show of portraits at Narwhal Art Projects. Entitled The Invisible College, this new body of oil paintings explores Appleby-Barr's profound involvement with the merits of portraiture. The Invisible College draws inspiration from an independent organization of philosophers whose purpose was to acquire knowledge through experimental investigation in 16th century Europe. Akin to the guild system, this group practice is exemplified by Hegelian collaboration: the free transfer of thought, expertise and tradition carried out without the establishment of designated facilities or institutional authority. Appleby-Barr explores the state of the personal disassociation with tradition and searches to find a connection with one's self and heritage. Working within a body of meticulously detailed oil portraits, Appleby-Barr conjures clues to uncovering the secrets of his own creation.

Continuing with the imagined legacies first constructed in the esoteric Nortammag Archives, allegoric images depicting varsity, academia, the occult and couture give lineage to an arcane society. Through the deliberate celebrity and obscurement of each character, Appleby-Barr speculates on the traditions of metaphorical, social and personal history. The Invisible College runs October 29th to November 29th at Narwhal Art Projects. The opening reception is Thursday, October 29th from 7-10pm. The artist will be in attendance.

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=30

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=30

So, this week we completed our first (of hopefully many more) Interactive Production workshop, which was attended by clients, partners, and agencies.

It was a long day of discussion, questions and guests including our very own, Jason Zada.

It was fantastic to see and hear the thoughts of producers across the board. We don't get together enough, the questions, comments and insights were stellar.

Some of my favorite comments to come out of the day are included below.

We'll be hosting more events like this moving forward, if you're interested in taking part in an upcoming workshop, please drop us a line.

So far, the interest has been fantastic. Thanks to everyone for their support, discussion, and feedback. It's extremely exciting to see the engagement of producers in these sessions.

"It's not "No", It's How" - Jason Zada on what's important from a producer.

"Being involved earlier can change everything" Pretty much every developer who joined us. :)

"The worst thing we can hear is "Just do it" or "I don't care what you think" - Adrian Busschaert

In the next few sessions we'll be focusing on client and agency production again, as well as doing a few sessions on interactive production for post production partners.

Ride the Wave

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=29

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=29

So, everyone seems to want a Google Wave invite, but when you ask people why they want one, there seems to be some confusion. Other than it being the next big thing on the internet, and the track record of Google's existing product suite, what's so great about Google Wave?

I'll tell you, and so will Google, and so on and so on. As someone who believes in the power of networks and collaboration Google Wave makes total sense to me. After all it's what the internet is. A network, open source, a dialogue. As someone who bases their entire business and life around collaboration and networks I have been waiting with baited breath for the release of Wave.

You've probably heard about it, but what is it?

Learn here:
A Long Video About Google Wave

There's something bigger in this in terms of a concept, Google has the ability to do what a lot of other companies don't. Stay collaborative and grow at the same time. They stick to the center, and we as consumers and users follow.

So it only makes sense that they'd open this up to us all, because that's what makes an idea better, collaboration.

I could say it until I'm blue in the face, and I often do, but the internet would be nothing without sharing, discussion and collaboration. A monopoly. Instead we have this incredible pipeline to information, to each other. Wave will change the face of both how we communicate online and how we do business. I'm sure of it.

I'm excited to get going, and I can't wait to see how Wave is going to change not only my user experience but my business.

Lunch is about collaboration within a network. Stay in touch, make it feel like it's a family no matter how big it gets. That's something I learned from Google.

New work from Tool's Jason Zada and Grant Skinner. It's pretty exciting to see a collaboration like this. Interactive minds collide for some work for Nike out of Wieden + Kennedy in Portland.

There's a bunch of different executions, but I have to say my favorite one is the staring execution. Mostly, I like it because I can't beat the staring contest. :)

Lunch news: Indusblue & Fatbox help MuchMusic find their next VJ

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=24

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=24

Much Music solicited the help of Indusblue and Fatbox in their quest to find their next VJ.

Strategically Much Music knew what they were looking for, when they came to Indusblue for design and development of what's likely the biggest contest of the year. Indusblue knew that hosting and delivery would be critical and engaged hosting provider Fatbox to deliver the infrastructure required to make the site function no matter what the traffic.

Indusblue worked closely with Much to develop the approach and launched the site three weeks ago.

Since launch the traffic to the site has been intense. "Much knows their brand and their audience, they knew what they were looking for going in and that focus on their audience made working with them a real partnership. Their understanding of the space, and ability to drive traffic socially is what made this such a great project to be a part of. We can't wait to see the results" said Dayton Pereira, Indusblue's co-founder.

"Over the past weekend of the promotion the site did over 100,000 uniques in two days. Average of 226 connections per second. We expect that by the end of the promotion we'll we looking at Terabytes and Terabytes of data. All of the video elements are actually hosted through YouTube, so we're looking at mostly data transfers" Says Fatbox's founder Evan Borgstrom.

It's been an interesting exercise to see how social media has driven traffic, as the top referrer is facebook rather than referrals from the Much Music site itself.

Kozyndan Opening - Thursday October 1st 2009

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=23

http://www.thelunchsite.com/news/?id=23

When Kristin Weckworth told me that Kozyndan would be on the Lunch roster under Narwhal, I almost cried. Yes, I love their work.

Kozue and Dan Kitchens are nothing short of brilliant. Their collaborative work is not only a feast of the senses, but also a testament to partnership on every level. I've often thought about how amazing it would be to be in a relationship as creatively collaborative as the one played out in the work of Kozyndan.

Frequently imitated, their work is a mix of cute, intense and complex. I've often found myself lost in the details of their work. I began collecting Kozyndan work in 2002, knowing little about them and completely mispronouncing their name. I also assumed at the time that the artist was an older Japanese man. I've coloured their colouring book, photocopied it to colour it more and proudly display a bunnyfish swimming through my master bathroom. I'm absolutely thrilled to have them as a part of the Lunch family and even more excited to see their new work at Narwhal this week.

Narwhal Art Projects & Magic Pony are pleased to present The Unknown Portraits, a new exhibition with American-Japanese artist duo Kozyndan. This exhibition documents a unique portraiture project spanning the past four years of Kozyndan's travels. Originating from a found photo album unearthed in a Venice Beach thrift shop, Kozyndan were inspired to create imagined personae documenting the essence of these lost photographs. This collection of ficticious ephemera is comprised solely of small, detailed graphite portraits, each piece capturing the surreal humour and observation that has become fundamental within Kozyndan's distinctive style of artwork.

This exhibition explores the modern obsession with personal documentation. Each tiny moment is a reflection on the inevitability that our personal triumphs will be lost in history, our lives rendered inconsequential, only to be discovered by a new audience and given new meaning.

This exhibition is celebrated with the release of "The Unknown Portraits", a 150 page hardcover book presenting the full collection of these unique portraits. Illuminating select portraits are short stories inspired and imagined by a community of artist friends and writers includIng Pasha Malla, Mark "frosty" McNeill, Ryan Sands and Porous Walker, as well as Canadian talents Nick Flanagan, Mariko Tamaki and Maggie MacDonald.

The Unknown Portraits is Kozyndan's third Canadian solo exhibition and runs from October 1 - 25, 2009. The opening reception will be held on Oct. 1st from 6-10pm, with a signing from 6-8pm. Kozyndan will be in attendance.

Kozyndan are available for digital work through Lunch.
